How are the program and examples organized?
Constructing examples, we used the concepts of Melody, Rhythm, Meter, Harmony, Tonality, and Key Signature.
The examples begin with the most basic levels of each of the concepts. When we increase the level of difficulty of the examples, we do so by focusing on only one of the aforementioned concepts at a time. For example, when subdivided rhythms are introduced, there is no change to the elements of Melody, Meter, Harmony, Tonality, or Key Signature, until the new concept has been given enough exposure to reach comprehension.
Are there enough examples to last an entire school year?
Our program has 700 examples. That is enough for each student to master 100 examples per school year for 7 years. A student beginning in 6th grade, accessing between 2-4 examples per week, would have enough examples until they graduate! The combination of the interactive format and the amount of examples provides for consistent progressive training and development which enable the success of the program.
Are there any computer requirements for the program?
We developed this program to be accessible by the masses using standard computer technology that exists on almost all computers:
- Standard Web Browser - such as Internet Explorer, Safari and most others - all browsers are free programs which usually come installed.
- Standard Media Player - such as Quicktime or Windows Media Player - both are free programs which usually come installed.
- A standard midi compatible sound card. If you computer has sound then it has a sound card built in.
Because of the display of the examples, the site is best viewed at a screen resolution of 1024X768 or higher.
Can the students access the program from any computer or different computers?
Yes, the students can access the site from any computer at anytime, anywhere; as well they can change computers, so they can begin the program on one computer and continue on others.
How do you evaluate or ensure that students are doing their assigments?
Evaluation is the key like any other aspect of teaching is paramount to success. If a teacher assigns homework and never checks it to see if it was completed, then the most students would not bother completing the assignments. You should determine which methods are most effective and efficient for your program, but one of the methods that has been commonly used with this program is to "randomly" select individuals (in larger groups first, then increasingly smaller) from the class to perform one of their assigned exercises. Use a tape or video recorder and have the students perform the examples individually. Periodically meet with students at assigned times (possibly exam times) and listen to them alone.
Some directors have been creative and had students leave singing voicemails on their telephone answering machine. Evaluation ensures the success of this program and most importantly - your students.
What if the students just memorize the examples I assign to them?
If students are able to memorize the examples and sing them back, then they are demonstrating comprehension of the aural concepts as they begin to develop. Memorization is especially effective if the students are using a tool or system (numbers, solfege etc. ). This is how they begin to hear the relationships of tonality and intervals.
Can I print out the examples from the program to use in class or to evaluate?
Yes, you can use the PDF manual of the program that you receive with purchase, which you can reference and print a copy. You can also print the teacher manual which contains 300 examples. This can be used for additional evaluation and testing.
Do you have feedback from directors that have used the program?
If you click on the link for testimonials, you will see some of the comments that we have received from the teachers that have used the program.
We use the 'fixed do.' does this program work for that method?
Yes. This program works for any system of sightsinging. Solfege, Movable, Fixed, Numbers, etc. Any system that you teach will function perfectly with the program.
Can I place a link to your website for my students to access the program?
Absolutely. If you want to place a link just contact the webmaster (or whomever administers your web site). The link would be http://www.choraltech.org. Students will still have to enter the username/password for to access the site when they arrive at the site.
